Festive preparations are underway for tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch On in Bury St Edmunds.

The event, organised by the Business Improvement District (BID) Ourburystedmunds, has brought a variety of food and drink stalls, rides and stage entertainment to Cornhill, while proving popular once again are the penguins at the top of Abbeygate Street.

If the Humboldt penguins on display look familiar, that’ll be because you’ve seen them before on BBC One’s Our Zoo.

They have travelled today from Oxfordshire’s Heythrop Zoological Gardens and, though bred in captivity in England, their ancestors are from South America.

Santa will be in town from 6.30pm and the lights will be switched on by BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Mark Murphy at 7pm, with a Blues Brothers tribute band set to make the fun last into the night.
