FOUR amateur cyclists, two wheels each and 1,066 miles.

Land’s End to John o’ Groats is the challenge that friends Chris Wood, 32, from Brandon, Kevin Firman, 28, from Bury St Edmunds, Jamie Barratt, 29, from Beck Row, and Kevin McKinlay, 30, from Bury, are taking on for Cancer Research UK and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Leaving today, the intrepid fund-raisers say they have done their best to get in shape for the gruelling trip, the idea for which was concocted in a pub chat.

Chris said: “None of us have cycled since we were kids, so it’s been a bit of a learning curve.

“We chose Cancer Research UK as it’s a cause that has affected a few of us in one way or another.”

The foursome will be part of a team of 11 riders taking part, with a target of £11,000 in their sights.

The team are aiming to complete the task in 14 days, with the longest day taking in a 110-mile ride.

Preparations for the Suffolk riders has included taking part in a ride from Luton to Cambridge.

Starting out on mountain bikes, the team will complete the real thing on road bikes.
