Cyclists and walkers in their hundreds turned out for the 32nd Suffolk Historic Churches Trust ride and stride event last Saturday.

They were able to tour 17 open churches in Bury St Edmunds alone and a further 23 in surrounding villages, all with volunteers waiting to welcome walkers and riders.

They were spread from Wordwell, Culford, West Stow and Lackford in the north to Wickhambrook, Whepstead and Great Whelnetham in the South and from Thurston and Great Barton in the East to Risby, Barrow and Denham to the west.

Those taking part included St Edmundsbury Cathedral’s sponsored cycle team of Richard Franklin, Iain Stark and James Stark who completed a record cycle ride in the event of 59 miles, visiting 25 churches.

Since 1973 the trust has awarded more than £3 million in grants to help maintain historic churches
