Bosses at a hospice are celebrating after receiving a £431,212 boost to help continue its community services over two years.

St Nicholas Hospice Care, in Bury St Edmunds, has scooped the substantial grant from the Big Lottery Fund to be used from April.

It follows an 18 to 20 per cent year on year rise in the number of referrals to the charity, which needs to raise £11,000 a day to operate.

Chief executive Barbara Gale said: “We have found that more and more patients want to receive care in their own homes, surrounded by the people, pets and belongings that are important to them.”

Among the initiatives benefitting from the money are the newly launched First Contact, which is a front of house and initial point of contact service for someone with a life shortening illness.
