Children from Horringer Court Middle School had a taste of Christmas six months early when they popped along to the Gatehouse charity’s warehouse to help it with its hamper boxes.

The community welfare charity in Dettingen Way, Bury St Edmunds, last year handed out 350 Christmas hampers, on top of preparing a dinner for those home alone, so it has to get ready for next Christmas rather earlier than most of us.

So as part of the Bury school’s community day, a party of 13 pupils, and teacher Donna Higgins, went along to start wrapping the vegetable trays donated by British Sugar in Christmas paper.

They also bagged up soft toys as presents for less fortunate children.

Mrs Higgins said other parties from the school were cleaning on the Priors Estate, litter picking on the Horringer Estate and woodland clearing at West Stow, while some were at school entertaining the elderly and cooking things for the community.
