The St Edmund’s Wheel Bike Ride proved a big hit at the weekend as people took to their saddles to raise cash for good causes. Beautiful sunshine greeted the 300 or so riders - around 100 up on last year’s event - as they set off from the Abbey Gardens, in Bury St Edmunds. At the time of publication, it was hoped the seventh annual event would beat the 2003 total of more than £9,000. Money raised will go the Bury Free Press’ Scanner Appeal as well as SGR’s Operation Santa Claus and other local charities.

Proposals to send a re-shaped Bury St Edmunds into the 21st century were on show for the first time. The plans provided a traffic free town centre, an improved inner ring road to keep cars moving and a new shopping centre on the Cattle Market site. They were revealed with the publication of the keenly awaited Halcrow Fox report on conservation, development and traffic. Leader of St Edmundsbury Council John Knight, welcomed the ideas, saying they fully understood problems in the town and approached them realistically.

Bury Town Council passed without comment a recommendation from the finance committee that a bid should be made to step up the town’s London overspill population to 30,000.
It was agreed that a three-point request be made to the West Suffolk County Council. The county is to be asked:
- to urge the Government to include Bury in the list of towns suggested for an expansion of at least 30,000 population.
