SEVENTEEN years of teaching sewing, sawing, camping and any other practical skill you can think of came to an end last week when a long-serving Guide leader retired.

Jane Leung, 57, has been leading the 7th Bury St Edmunds Girl Guides group for more than a decade, having started out in Moulton as a Brownie leader.

Having announced she would be handing over the reins to Camille Salmon and Louise Price, last Thursday her group gave her a send-off to remember, with a presentation of memorabilia including a DVD of photos.

Jane said: “I didn’t know anything about it and I arrived and found I had to dress as Yogi Bear.

“The memorabilia was lovely but the older girls got quite tearful and it was an emotional evening.”

Seeing the girls grow up and giving them lifelong skills were the highlight of the job, according to Jane.

“They come in at 10 and by the time they are 14 they have learned so much. I felt like we were giving them the skills that they couldn’t pick up at school,” she said.

Despite stepping down as leader, Jane will still be involved in guiding in the area.
