Greene King has laid on an extra 400 free car parking spaces in Bury St Edmunds in the run up to Christmas and the New Year.
The pub retailer and brewer is making its staff car park off Cullum Road available for use by the public for the five Saturdays from tomorrow up to and including January 3.
The move follows discussions between Greene King and St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
Cllr Alaric Pugh, St Edmundsbury Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, said: “We know that our car parks are extremely busy at this time of year, especially at weekends. We have already announced initiatives such as Free from 3 car parking on Thursdays in the run up to Christmas, as well as on the usual Tuesdays.
“We have made our own staff car park in Olding Road, which is just 15 minutes walk from the town centre, available for free over the next three weekends.
“Greene King kindly made their car park available during our very successful Christmas Fayre, and I am delighted that they are making it available for the remaining Saturdays between now and January 3.
“For shoppers, it means that whatever side of the town you are driving in from, there is an opportunity to park and walk, and to avoid some of the traffic queues.”
A Greene King spokesperson said: “We all know how busy it can get in our popular town centre over Christmas so hopefully by opening up our car park it will make a trip to the shops a little easier.”
St Edmundsbury is also advising people to arrive in town before 10am or after 3pm to beat the traffic queues. Alternatively why not make use of Free from 3 car parking, available in Bury on Tuesdays and now every Thursday between now and Christmas.
