A COMMUNITY woodland and country park have been awarded green flag status by the Keep Britain Tidy Group.
West Stow Country Park won the flag for the first time alongside three other parks in St Edmundsbury, The Abbey Gardens, Nowton Park and East Town Park in Haverhill.
Lukeswood in Elmswell, a community woodland created as part of the People’s Millions competition, was also awarded the status which recognises high quality green spaces. It was created in 2010 when tree planting began and early in 2011 the 1,683rd tree was planted - one tree for every house in the village.
Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, borough council Cabinet member for culture and sport, said: “Well-managed, high quality green spaces are an important element of the enviable quality of life in our borough. The Green Flag award is reassessed each year and I am delighted that our parks are going from strength to strength.”
