THE commander of a US base has given local councils’ top brass a briefing on the important job the facility has in our area.

Col Christopher Kulas, 100th Air Refueling Wing commander at RAF Mildenhall, welcomed newly-elected mayors and chairmen of nearby councils to show them how the base operates at his New Mayor’s Barbecue.

Those present included Cllr Derek Mortimer, Thetford’s mayor, Cllr John Powley, chairman of Cambridgeshire County Council, and Cllr Keith Bovill, mayor of Newmarket.

More than 20,000 active service members, civilians and dependents live at RAF Mildenhall, Lakenheath and Feltwell, according to Col Kulas.
