A grateful mum whose son was born two months early has paid tribute to West Suffolk Hospital’s Neonatal Unit by organising a fund-raising ‘sale trail’.
Joseph Carroll weighed just 2lb 8oz when he was born in March this year, spending almost a month at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and then West Suffolk before returning to his Bury St Edmunds home.
His mum, Roxana, said: “The staff at West Suffolk Hospital didn’t just help Joseph, but they helped me too.
“I think I was in shock for quite a while when we first arrived, but they were always on hand if we, as a family, had any questions. They were so calm and always made us feel comfortable and at ease.”
To thank staff, Roxana has organised a sale trail around Bury’s Horringer Court estate on Saturday, with money to be raised from the sales of tables, maps and a raffle.
She added: “I don’t think you really appreciate what happens on a neonatal unit until you are there and in that situation.
“I had raised funds many years ago towards purchasing an incubator for this unit and I never once thought one day my own baby would need to use one. You never know what is round the corner but it is such a wonderful department.
“Joseph is doing really well and getting bigger. He is doing everything he is supposed to and that is all we can ask. He is a very lucky little boy.”
Stalls for the sale trail – which takes place between 10am and 2pm - cost just £5 with participants able to sell items in their garage or garden.
Maps produced for the event, directing bargain-hunters, will be available from Kelso Road.
