NEW-look plans for the front of The Mix youth complex have been revealed.

Work started a year ago on the bulk of the complex but the plans for the frontage on to Ipswich Street, Stowmarket, were rejected by Mid Suffolk District and Stowmarket Town Councils.

But yesterday new designs were revealed which will be shown in the town next weekend and go for planning approval in mid-August.

The replacement building was designed with input from local young people.

Shania Douglas, 14, from Stowmarket High School, who did work experience on The Mix, said she hoped the design was respectful to nearby older buildings, but exciting enough to please planners and the community.

She said; “It is about time that Stowmarket obtained something as new, exciting and amazing as The Mix. I love being involved in this project because I can walk past when it’s complete and tell everyone: ’I helped design that’.”

The Mix will be a multi-purpose youth facility where young people aged 13 to 19 can experience recreational activities in a safe place and access independent advice.

Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for education and young people, said; “This is a really exciting time for everyone involved – a chance to finally see how the building will look.”

Anne Whybrow, town mayor and a county councillor, said: “What I am most pleased about is that young people from the town had the final say in how the building will look.”

John Shaw, chairman of the The Mix Trust, said: “It was a tall order to come up with a building which fits in to the existing street, but also looks modern to attract young people. I believe that the architect, Richard Christmas from Atkins Global, has responded well to the brief.”

Details of the application will be found on the county council’s ePlanning portal: http://atrium.suffolkcc.gov.uk/ePlanning

The new design will be shown on Saturday August 11 from 11am to 3pm at Redwoods, The Red Gables, Ipswich Road, Stowmarket.
