After having 34 short stories published, Gerard Allardyce has his first novel out.

The General’s Formula is one of six novels Gerard, of Ipswich Court, Bury St Edmunds, has written, but the first to be published by Vanguard Press.

It is about a former military commander, now an alcoholic with depression, who knows of a Soviet version of the German strategy used in the two World Wars and dreams of being made a Field Marshal and Supreme Commander of NATO.

Gerard. 61, wrote short stories which were published by Forward Press but only started writing novels in 2002.

“I’m delighted,” he said. “It’s not just for what I might get, it’s that my work is out there.”

Gerard, who has lived in Bury for 23 years, has had a variety of jobs, after becoming ill while at teacher training college, ranging from radio operator on a pipe laying barge to an orderly at the Artificial Limbs and Appliance Centre.

He has a signing at Buttermarket Waterstones on Saturday March 29 between 11am and 2pm.

His book is also on sale at
