Michael Lee, a director of Mildenhall Fen Tigers and former speedway champion has been charged with rape.

Suffolk Police said today he faces two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of actual bodily harm.

Michael Lee, 54, of Freckenham Road, Worlington was charged on yesterday at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre and will appear before Bury Magistrates’ Court on October 21.

The club issued a statement on Wednesday saying: “It is unfortunate that following Michael’s relationship breakdown earlier this year further legal charges have been brought upon him.

“Michael has assured everybody involved at the club that he will do all he can to clear his name of all the charges.

“During this time Michael will not be carrying out any of his normal duties at the club and Mildenhall Speedway will not be making any further comment until the completion of all legal proceedings.”

The charges relate to incidents which occurred between January 1, 2008 and December 28, 2012 involving two women.

Mr Lee, who is a co-promoter of the Fen Tigers, raced for King’s Lynn, Poole and Boston and was individual world champion in 1980.
