A die-hard football fan missed in first home game in 37-years at the weekend, to watch his step-daughter’s wedding in Stowmarket instead.

Wolves fan Peter Abbott missed his sides 1-1 draw against Coventry to watch stepdaughter Sarah Butler marry Jonathan Liddle in Stowmarket.

Peter, 56, still tuned in to listen to the second half – and there was a surprise as Wolves record goal scoring legend Steve Bull turned up at the Wedding to present him with a signed shirt.

Football mad Peter travels 330 miles from his home in Ipswich to go to home games.

“When they told me the date, I was gutted. My first reaction was to hope something would change - maybe the game would be postponed,” he said.

“It was a big wrench, but you have to draw a line under something in your life. Not watching Wolves play never crosses my mind. It’s just a part of my life.”

The last home game Peter missed was a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in March 1976, while Peter has only missed one away game in all that time - a 3-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers in May 1985 after his train broke down as he travelled to the game.

“It was the first game in 37 years I haven’t been to.

But it was all for my step-daughter, and that’s what counts,” Peter said.
