THE cause of a fire which wrecked a top restaurant’s staff house is being investigated.

The fire on Monday night swept through the upper floor of a house in Prentice Street, Lavenham, which was home to three members of staff from celebrity chef Marco Pierre White’s nearby Angel Hotel.

A fire crew from Sudbury was first on the scene at 9.10pm but had to call in help from Hadleigh, Nayland and Bury St Edmunds, including a turntable ladder, as they struggled to stop the fire spreading through the roof to neighbouring houses.

Over the next hour and a quarter fire crews wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire in the house.

Though the fire was out by 10.26pm, crews stayed until the early hours because the building remained excessively hot.

They checked the roof spaces of neighbouring properties with a thermal imaging camera.

The Angel’s manager Emma Bennett said it was fortunate that her staff were all at work when the fire happened.

“The main concern from our point of view was that nobody was hurt,” she said. “The house is repairable, but it’s going to take a long time.”

She said they were looking for alternative accommodation for the staff and would like to hear from anyone who can help on 01787 247388.
