BRYAN and Eileen Manning’s family must have planned their golden wedding party like a military operation.
The couple thought they were going for a family meal on Friday but instead were taken round the corner to Hargrave Village Hall where about 50 friends and family had secretly gathered, including their four children and six grandchildren. There were even neighbours from School Cottages, who had had to get past the Mannings’ home unseen.
“I don’t know how they kept it quiet,” Eileen said. “Even my mum was there and she’s 90!”
Retired lorry driver Bryan, 75, has lived in Hargrave all his life, apart from time in the Catering Corps. They met while he was at Gibraltar Barracks in Bury, where Eileen, 69, was brought up. They married at Bury Register Office.
