Reserve welcomes ‘Zorro’
ONE of nature’s more photogenic performers has been wowing amateur snappers at a reserve.
RSPB Lakenheath Fen’s latest visitor turned up last Friday – a great grey shrike.
The distinctively-patterned bird sports a black stripe across its eyes – earning it the nickname Zorro among reserve staff.
David White, information officer at RSPB Lakenheath Fen, said: “It is great to have a great grey shrike on the reserve again.
“They behave like miniature birds of prey and have a habit of perching right out in the open.”
A great grey shrike previously appeared at the reserve between November 2008 and April 2009, and staff are optimistic that it could be the same bird.
The species nests in Scandinavia and around 60 visit the UK a year.
