Oak tree scheme for diamond jubilee
PARISH councils are to be given an oak tree to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council will provide the authorities with a tree, tree guard and plaque to commemorate the royal anniversary.
Bosses aim to plant 60 trees over two years and already 17 parishes have subscribed to the scheme.
The plans are part of a number of jubilee festivities, which were approved by St Edmundsbury’s cabinet this week.
A beacon is to be lit in the Abbey Gardens as part of a national programme.
Meanwhile, trees will be planted during the formal opening of the new Nowton Park visitor centre later this month.
The woodland area will be officially recognised as the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Plantation/Clump.
A commemorative oak tree in an ornate guard will also be planted in Nowton Park in June.
Other events in Bury St Edmunds will include a Whitsun Fayre and Big Lunch Picnic.
During the cabinet meeting, Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, portfolio holder for culture and sport, said: “We are in for a great year with the jubilee and the Olympic celebrations.
“These are very well planned events. I think they’re in keeping with the times which are quite austere.”
