A BURY St Edmunds resident has discovered the real worth of having ‘a bird in the hand’.

Ken Compton was amazed to find a nest of blue tits inside a vent at his home in Gardiner Close.

The 70-year-old removed the nest and took these vivid shots before returning the family to their hidden refuge.

Mr Compton, who is a former railway engineer, said: “We left the grille off because we noticed there were a couple of dead chicks inside.

“The parents continued to feed the chicks and two days later they all flew off.

“I’ve still got the nest and I’m going to build a box to assimilate what there is.

“If they come back next year they will then hopefully go into the box rather than the vent.

“It was nice to see them in action.

“We don’t know how long they were there. We noticed something was taking straw from one of our hanging baskets.”
