Campaigners trying to save a green space from being earmarked for development have created an ‘instant’ petition.

The Water Meadows Group wants the Leg of Mutton field removed from the 2031 strategic plan for Bury St Edmunds to save a green area linked to the Abbey Gardens.

The field beside the River Lark is bordered by Rougham Road, the A14 and a cycleway between Raingate Street and Moreton Hall.

Andrew Hinchley, chairman of the group, said they had to act quickly to present a petition to St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s cabinet meeting on Wednesday. It is the last meeting before a six week break for elections so the group collected 25 signatures, five more than the minimum required to be heard.

Mr Hinchley said: “The Bury expansion plan will be on the minister’s desk in Whitehall for approval in no time at all.”

He urged the council: “Please listen to Bury residents and get this particular proposal off the table now”

The field is in the plan proposal as a hotel site. The Water Meadows Group comprises local residents and groups, including the Bury and Suffolk Preservation Societies,
