Arctic weather covers Suffolk with snow
RESIDENTS in Suffolk and Norfolk woke up to a blanket of white on Sunday as heavy snowfall hit the region.
Bury St Edmunds saw more than 15cms of snow fall in just a few hours on Saturday night causing dangerous conditions on roads and footpaths.
Suffolk County Council’s fleet of gritters worked round the clock to clear priority routes, with many of Suffolk’s farmers joining in to clear the county’s rural roads.
There were no closures of schools around Bury St Edmunds on Monday, although parents at Riverwalk School were told staff would collect their children from the top of the access drive due to dangerous road conditions.
But after concerns were raised Suffolk County Council it was decided the area would be gritted and talks are under way to reassess winter safety precautions in the future.
Norwich Road School, in Thetford, was closed until Tuesday because the school grounds were deemed too dangerous but reopened on Wednesday morning.
Calls to the ambulance service soared over the weekend – a rise by more than 20 per cent on the same weekend last year. Collisions were up nearly double..
But the number of patients requiring hospital treatment following a collision was significantly lower than both last year and last weekend.
West Suffolk Hospital reported the number of people attending A&E on Sunday was actually lower than it would normally expect although the number of orthopaedic injuries, such as fractures and breaks, did slightly increase.
On Tuesday evening, temperatures plummeted to -6 C in some areas .
This weekend will see another cold snap hit the region with temperatures set to drop to -4 on Friday and Saturday night.
