Allotments enjoy a sunny open day
Open day on the Cotton Lane allotments in Bury.
THE wet weather may have slowed down this year’s growing season, but Cotton Lane allotment holders benefited from a good turn out on Sunday at their open day.
While there was less produce available to sell, the allotment association raised £173.15 for St Nicholas Hospice Care and people had a chance to chat to members and enjoy a browse around the plots.
Nearly all the 150 allotments have been snapped up by people eager to grow their own following expansion of the Bury St Edmunds site.
Bill Browning, allotment association committee member, said: “We’ve had plenty of lush growth but because it has been so wet and cold the insects haven’t been around to pollinate the crops.
“We were lucky with the weather and we had a good turn out on the day.”
A scarecrow competition was staged with one model reflecting the town’s Olympic involvement by holding a torch aloft to scare away birds.
The allotment holders range from children learning to grow produce to those in their eighties, some of whom spend long hours creating and cultivating their green haven.
