Eight candidates contest two seats in by-elections

Eight people have been nominated for two upcoming by-elections within St Edmundsbury.

Conservative Susan Ann Glossop, who is acting clerk for Thetford Town Council, Labour’s Cliff Hind, who is a Bury St Edmunds town councillor, and Green candidate Julia Wakelam are contesting the borough’s Risbygate ward, in Bury St Edmunds.

Mrs Wakelam is the only one living on the ward, in Northgate Avenue. She is a solicitor and is chairman of charity Gatehouse and a governor of Horringer Court Middle School.

Cllr Mark Ereira-Guyer, Suffolk’s Green Group leader, said: “Julia is a truly first class local candidate.”

Mrs Glossop, of Flempton, works as Thetford town manager. She is chairman of Thetford Women in Business, a Thetford Business Forum board member and chairman and trustee of Flempton Cum Hengrave village hall funds.

Mr Hind lives on Moreton Hall and is retired after a career in manufacturing and medical research. He is a member of the Friends of Moyse’s Hall Museum.

There will also be an election for Sapiston Parish Council.

Those standing are: Abagail Fiona Fox, Julie Lea, Deborah Lock, William Ian Tidy and Liz Vaughan.

A poll for both elections will be held on November 15, between 7am-10pm.
