A WOODTURNING club has come to the rescue after a primary school was left without any toys for the pupils.

Elmswell Primary School lost all of its toys when classrooms were flooded following a burst water pipe during the Christmas holidays.

Bury St Edmunds Woodturners – a club dedicated to creating and shaping wooden objects with a lathe – have made a variety of toys to replace those that were lost.

The school remained closed for an extra week due to the flood and staff were forced to throw away two skips full of toys, furniture and equipment.

But the school now has a new collection of toys for the children, specially crafted for them by the woodturning club members.

On Wednesday, the woodturners presented their toys to the children at Elmswell Primary School.

Headteacher Jane Ash said she was ‘delighted’ with the quality and variety of the toys and thanked the group for their generosity and time.

The Bury Woodturners gave a wide range of toys, including puzzles, ten pin bowling pins, soldier skittles, cars and trains. The group also donated a number of books.

Ron Davis, secretary of the group, said: “My grandson goes to that school and being a woodturning club it seemed the most appropriate thing to do.

“It’s given the members an opportunity to create things and they responded very well to it.”
