Students whipped up a selection of cakes to sell in aid of a charity which re-homes commercial laying hens.

The group at Thurston Community College held the bake sale to promote and raise funds for the British Hen Welfare Trust.

They researched the plight of battery chickens and used free range eggs donated by staff who have their own hens.

The activity was organised by English Teacher Jennny Stone.

She said: “A lot of the students do have former battery chickens. The ones who didn’t know about it were really shocked by the conditions they are kept in.”
