Stowmarket Middle School
A Stowmarket school facing closure under plans to scrap the county's three-tier education system has been commended by an inspector.
Stowmarket Middle School was described as a 'good' school in a report by Kevin Corrigan, an inspector from the the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).
It was praised for providing a 'caring and supportive environment', where pupils do well both in their academic progress and personal development.
The report said good overall progress and achievement was a 'consequence of the good teaching the pupils receive and the careful monitoring of their individual progress'.
The curriculum was recognised as offering a wide range of subjects, which were seen as 'stimulating, challenging and meeting pupils' needs'.
And the report said the school offered pupils an extensive range of extra-curriculum, activities and clubs, 'contributing much to pupils' cultural development and enjoyment'.
But headteacher Sally Holmes said the report would not change the fact the school was still facing closure.
She said: "I am delighted with the report, which does outline some of the school's achievements.
"This is a testament of the hard work of the teachers, children and parents and it is a shame that although this shows how good our school is we are going to be closed."
The decision to scrap middle schools in Suffolk was announced by the county council early last year. It says the move will help to improve teaching and pupil performance.
The changes are expected to take place in 2012.
