Schools in Bury St Edmunds have swept the board after triumphing in recent western area competitions.

County Upper School’s Year 9 and 12 students won their respective categories in the Bury Rotary Public Speaking Competition as did Year 5 and 8 pupils at St Louis Middle.

Senior musicians at the secondary school took the top spot in five heats at the West Suffolk Young Musician of the Year with the middle school achieving success at level one.

They will perform in a showcase at The Apex on July 15.

County Upper’s Year 10 students also came top in the regional heat of the National Team Challenge in Mathematics and will progress to the final in Cambridge next month.

n French students visited West Suffolk College to try their hand at carpentry, painting, bricklaying and plumbing. Thirteen young people and three lecturers from the Lycée Pierre Carminot, in Egletons en Correze took part in the activities at The Milburn Centre. It was part of the Have-a-Go project led by the Association of Colleges in the Eastern region.

n Culford Senior School pupil Toby Reed has been selected to play for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. The young percussionist auditioned last year for the band which provides opportunities for young people to play brass band music to the highest standards. In further Culford news, audiences packed the school’s centenary hall to enjoy performances of musical Beauty and the Beast.

n Budding reporters at Westley Middle and County Upper were due to write, film, edit and upload a variety of stories during a live news day for the BBC’s national School Report initiative.
