School league table results
SUFFOLK’S schools have shown a three per cent improvement at GCSE – but are still behind the national average.
Key Stage Four league table results released by the Department for Education reveal that 54.7 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C GCSEs or equivalent including English and maths.
This is compared to 51.8 per cent the previous year.
The county is still falling behind the national average which is 58.9 per cent for all schools and 58.2 per cent for state funded schools only.
Those achieving grades A* to C in English and maths GCSEs in Suffolk stands at 55.7 per cent compared to the national average for all schools of 59.5 per cent.
Meanwhile, pupils making expected progress in English is 69.7 per cent with maths at 63.5 per cent.
The top performing state school in the county is St Benedict’s Catholic School, in Bury St Edmunds.
It is also first in the A-level league table for Suffolk.
St Benedict’s has been first in Suffolk for A-level for the previous three years, but this is the first time it has topped the GCSE league table.
Headteacher Hugh O’Neill said: “It’s a source of enormous pride that St Benedict’s should have achieved this remarkable level of success. Clearly, this reflects the tremendous efforts made by all concerned – students, teachers, support staff, parents; success in education always involves a huge team effort, and it really has paid off this year.”
The percentage of students gaining five or more A*-C grades including English and maths at the school was 81.
In Norfolk, 55.4 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C GCSEs including English and maths compared to 52.3 per cent the previous year.Meanwhile, 56.2 per cent managed to attain grades A* to C in English and maths.
