Honey is playing for a cause close to her heart
Honey Childs is going deaf but still plays the piano. She is organising a music concert to raise money and awareness
A TALENTED young musician, who has lost 60 per cent of her hearing, has organised a concert in aid of a charity close to her heart.
Honey Childs, 16, has arranged the musical show Winter Wonderland at her school, King Edward VI, in Grove Road, Bury St Edmunds, on Wednesday, to raise funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society.
She hopes the concert will remind people how fortunate they are to be able to hear music while also showcasing her skills as an events organiser – a vocation she would like to pursue in the future.
The Year 11 student, from Lavenham, said: “I know there are people a lot worse off than me but I want to get others to realise how lucky they are to hear music and that they shouldn’t take it for granted.”
Honey is ‘moderately deaf’ and doctors have been unable to establish the cause or whether her hearing will decline further.
When playing the piano, she sometimes has to use her hands to feel the vibrations of the notes.
She said: “I do struggle to hear and it can be very frustrating at times. My hearing has always been slightly impaired from since I can remember. I’m having tests to see if it’s deteriorating any more. They don’t know whether it will get worse or settle. There’s cause for concern which is why it’s always good to get as much music in my head as possible.”
The concert is part of that ambition and also gives fellow students the chance to showcase their talents.
Highlights include a folk band performing a song written by a Year 11 student, a dance choreographed by two GCSE pupils and Honey playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.It follows a charity music gala she organised in March, which raised £500 for the society.
Honey said: “Finding people to fit an event or being asked to put an event on is something I really like to do.”
The concert starts at 7.30pm and doors open at 7.15pm. For students and their relatives, tickets are available from the school for £2 to £3. Members of the public can buy them at the door for £4.
