'Good' grading for Weeting Primary School

A village primary school that was told it had "serious weaknesses" five years ago has turned its act around and been rated as a "good" school by inspectors.

Ofsted inspectors visited Weeting Primary School, which caters for 148 pupils aged five to 11, in June - and graded the school as "good".

Headteacher Bob Carr said it was an improved result on the previous inspection in 2007 and a "drastic jump up" from a report five years ago.

The latest Ofsted report stated: "Weeting Primary School is a good school. Pupils work and play in a harmonious, happy and safe environment.

"They enter the school with attainment levels below age-related expectations but good teaching, expert, individualistic support and an interesting, stimulating curriculum ensure that children make good progress right from the start in developing their English, mathematical and scientific skills."

Inspectors praised leadership at the school, the quality of teaching and said pupils felt safe and could approach teaching staff.

"Pupils receive good care, guidance and support and are known and treated as individuals," the report said.

"The curriculum is very well planned and the thematic approach provides many opportunities for pupils to develop their learning through stimulating and exciting topics."

Inspectors highlighted that writing remained a relative weakness and that changes were needed to improve pupils awareness and understanding of different cultures and communities.

Mr Carr added: "We are thrilled that Ofsted has recognised the school's achievements and highlighted our pupils' enjoyment of school and the commitment of our staff and school community to providing them with the best educational start to their lives.

"Our real strength here is that we work together as one team - everyone is included and feels comfortable and empowered.

"We know we need to improve in areas. We live in a rural community where over 95 per cent of the school community is white British. We are aware the children do not have a lot of contact and experiences of other cultures so we are now working to create lots of exciting opportunities to change that."
