College gets top marks for studies
West Suffolk College has been judged as outstanding in some areas and good overall after a recent Ofsted inspection.
Inspectors found that students made good progress and quickly developed good vocational skills. The college responded exceptionally well to the needs of students and employers, offered an exceptionally good rangeof courses and provideed outstanding value for money, said the inspector's report.
Instances of bullying, harassment or discrimination were almost non-existent and support for learning plentiful and of high quality.
"The college has maintained high success rates since the last inspection. In 2008/09 they declined markedly but remained above national averages," the report stated.
Health and social care, construction, hairdressing and beauty therapy were graded outstanding and visual arts and media were graded as good with many outstanding features - governance and financial management were also graded as outstanding.
Principal Dr Ann Williams said: "We were very pleased with the report, in particular that it recognised the outstanding work of our curriculum.
Our work with employers was considered excellent and success rates for Train to Gain, which is training on employers' premises, are high.
"Our success rate for 2008/09 remained in the top quartile and the inspectors saw that the indications are already clear that they should be even better at the end of the current academic year."
