A FRIENDSHIP between two continents cemented further links when an African bishop visited Bury St Edmunds.

Bishop Isaiah Chambala, from the diocese of Kiteto in central Tanzania, brought letters from children at Kiteto Christian College to youngsters at Guildhall Feoffment Primary School when he visited on Monday.

The pupils have been supporting the African school and raised £500 to build and equip the library at Keteto in 2009.

Head teacher Sue Herriott said: “It is important for children to appreciate and respect other people’s backgrounds and culture. If we give children good moral values they will respect others.”

The Bishop spent five days in Bury, building on links established by the congregation of St Mary’s Church when the then vicar, Canon John Hayden, became Bishop of the diocese of Mount Kilimanjaro eight years ago.
