A distant relative of James Oakes has helped a pair of friends to launch a new pub named after the leading historical figure.
Christopher Oakes cut the ribbon to launch Oakes Barn, in St Andrews Street South, which has been inspired by the yarn merchant and banker who built the original building.
The real ale pub is run by friends Susan Wilde and Heather Warren.
Mr Oakes, who works at Hazells Chartered Surveyors in the town, said: “I think Heather and Susan have done a wonderful job in creating Oakes Barn and perpetuating the influence which James Oakes had on the town.
“They’ve clearly carried out a lot of research into his life and a summary of this can be found in the pub.”
