THE year Derek Turner first popped down his village pub, Beyton’s Bear Inn, Franklin D Roosevelt became US president, scientists split the atom and the Mars Bar went on sale for the first time.

In 2012 Derek celebrates 80 years of visiting his favourite watering hole.

The 89-year-old, from Beyton, first visited the pub as a boy to play with the son of the then landlord – and has been going ever since.

Derek said: “I have been going down there for 79 years – and I still go using my electric chair when the weather is good.

“I have known all four generations of the family who have owned the pub.

“The reason I have kept going to the Bear is the people – they are all so lovely and friendly.”
