IT HAS taken 17 years, but RSPB Lakenheath Fen finally has its second ever site manager.

Having retired at the end of May, long-serving former site manager Norman Sills handed over his binoculars and spotter’s badges to new boss Dave Rogers.

Mr Rogers said he was excited to be taking over the 500-acre wetland site.

“It is a wonderful site with many great species, some familiar like bittern and marsh harrier and others new to me like the cranes.

“I feel privileged to be taking on the site from Norman who has done such a wonderful job creating the reserve and I hope we can continue to move the site forward providing a wildlife haven in the Fens,” he said.

Mr Rogers has 20 years in reserve management, including a successful stint running the Stodmarsh reserve in Kent.

Mr Sills ran Lakenheath Fen from its inception in 1994. He was at the forefront of planning the site, which now receives more than 30,000 visitors a year.
