A VILLAGE pub has returned to its roots after new landlords got behind the pumps.
After three years managing the Spread Eagle in Bury St Edmunds, Dave and Cath Gwillim have taken the reins at The Chequers, in Eriswell.
The pair launched the refurbished pub on October 21 and customers have been pouring in ever since.
Cath said: “It has been amazing. It used to be a Tex-Mex restaurant and I think the people here are delighted to see it back as a traditional English pub.”
Steak and curry nights, chef’s specials and two meals for the price one are on all the menu at the pub, and the Gwillims have tried to ensure punters feel welcome in the spruced up pub.
“We’d been looking for a place like this for years and I think it’s got a lovely feel when you come in. It’s contemporary but with a traditional side too,” according to Cath.
The Gwillims had worked for landlords including Wetherspoons for more than 10 years and Cath said it was time for them to strike out on their own.
“We’ve always made money wherever we’ve been and we thought it was time to do it for ourselves,” she said.
