Police probe murder

POLICE continue to investigate the murder of a woman from Ipswich after her body was found in Needham Lake on Sunday morning.

The woman, officially identified on Tuesday as 60-year-old Ruth Jacobs, was found at the nature reserve at 8am on Sunday by a local man out walking with his 21-month-old son.

A post-mortem examination showed Mrs Jacobs died as a result of drowning.

A 58-year-old man from Ipswich was later arrested 30 miles away at Wissett Lake on suspicion of murder. He was held in police custody at hospital and has been detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act but is no longer under arrest.

Police cordons were put in place at Needham Lake, in Coddenham Road, Needham Market and at Wissett Lake but have now been lifted.

Mrs Jacobs’ family and the coroner have been informed of her death and an inquest will be opened in due course.

Flowers were laid at the entrance to Needham Lake by the Gipping Valley Model Boat Club, which uses the lake.

One dog walker at Needham Lake spoke of her shock at the discovery.

The woman from Elmswell, who did not wish to be named, said: “Generally, I would say it’s a lovely place, but it’s made me a bit more frightened about coming here.”

Police are appealing for information as the investigation into Mrs Jacobs’ death continues.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said: “Detectives want to speak to anyone who was in the area of Needham Lake between 4pm Saturday, February 19, and 8am on Sunday, February 20, particularly in the early hours of Sunday morning, and anyone who was at Wissett Lake between 4pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.”

Anyone with information should call the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Major Investigation Team on 01473 613500.
