A COURT has ordered that a man who sexually assaulted a woman and exposed himself be placed on the sex offenders’ register.
Darren John Barton, 29, of All Saints Road, Creeting St Mary, went behind a shop counter and sexually assaulted the lone worker before dropping his boxer shorts in front of her.
He pleaded guilty to both charges at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.
Prosecuting, Rosalind Cappleman said that at around 8.40pm on May 2 Barton entered a shop in Stowmarket and called the worker by her nickname, before walking behind the counter and hugging her.
She did not recognise him but later realised that they had known each other as children, said Mrs Cappleman.
Barton began swearing, at which point the victim told him he was not allowed behind the counter.
She tried to close the counter door, but it caught him in the face and he pulled her towards him. He grabbed the victim, unbuttoned his jeans and pulled down his boxer shorts.
In mitigation, David Stewart said that Barton and the victim had been exchanging texts of an intimate nature since March.
Barton was released on conditional bail until July 19 when he will be sentenced.
