A POLISH man who was spotted driving the wrong way round a roundabout was over the drink-drive limit.
Mateusz Piaskowy, 26, of McIntyre Walk, Bury St Edmunds, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and driving without a licence or insurance at Bury Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Prosecuting, Rosalind Cappleman said at around 11.25pm on October 16, police spotted Piaskowy driving the wrong side of a roundabout in McIntyre Walk.
He was breathalysed and a reading of 42 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath was recorded.
Piaskowy had never taken a driving test in England or Poland, said Mrs Cappleman.
In mitigation, Malcolm Plummer said although the journey was no more than 100 yards, Piaskowy had been tempted to drive to some local shops to buy cigarettes.
He had received driving lessons from friends in Poland so knew how to drive, he added.
Piaskowy was banned from driving for 12 months, to be reduced by three on completion of a driver’s rehabilitation course. He was fined a total of £250, ordered to pay costs of £85, a victim surcharge of £15 and had his licence endorsed.
