POLICE have charged a 20-year-old man with murder following the death of 66-year-old jeweller Peter Avis.
Kamil Kita, an unemployed man of no fixed address, was arrested by police on Monday January 23 and taken into custody at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.
On Wednesday, he was charged with Mr Avis’ murder and appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning.
An 18-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been bailed until March 21.
Police have also appealed to the public to trace 28-year-old Pyotr Melaniuk, who is wanted for questioning in connection with the Mr Avis’ death.
Mr Melaniuk, who is Polish, is also thought to go by the names Irek Marciewicz, Pyotr Kelaniuil, Kamil Wislak and Ireneusz Melaniuk.
He is described as white, 5ft 6in tall, slim to medium build with short hair.
A distinguishing feature is that the two middle fingers of his right hand above the knuckles are missing together with the thumb from the same hand.
He has tattoos on his hands and a spider tattoo on his right arm.
Mr Melaniuk is known to have connections to North London and Brighton and although it is thought he could be in either of these places it is possible he could be elsewhere in the country.
Detective Superintendent Julian Gregory, head of the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen Melaniuk recently or, more importantly, anyone with information about where he is now.
“I would stress that if anyone does see Melaniuk or someone they suspect to be him, they should not approach him but should call police immediately using 999 if necessary. We would like to reassure the public that we are working closely with other forces to apprehend this man as soon as possible.”
The body of 66-year-old Mr Avis was discovered by police on Friday January 13 in his flat above jewellers Collis and Son in Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds.
A post-mortem examination, conducted at West Suffolk Hospital a day later, revealed he had died of stab wounds.
Three people have now been charged in connection with the incident and several remain on bail.
On Wednesday January 18, Pawel Pacian, 34, from Lake Avenue, Bury St Edmunds, appeared before Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court charged with conspiracy to commit burglary.
Pawel Borowiecki, 30, from Roslyn Road, London, appeared before Bury magistrates on Thursday, January 19, also charged with conspiracy to commit burglary.
An 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit burglary, and a 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary have been bailed until March 20.
A 34-year-old man and a 30-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder, are due to return to Ipswich Police Investigation Centre on March 27 and March 20 respectively.
