FOUR illegal immigrants were arrested in a raid on an Indian restaurant in Bury St Edmunds last Thursday.
The men, all from Bangladesh, were arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency’s local immigration team at the Valley Connection Indian Restaurant, in Churchgate Street, at around 5.30pm.
A UK Border Agency spokesman said that checks revealed the four members of staff had no permission to be in the UK, with three of them, aged, 37, 34 and 31, having entered the UK illegally while one, aged 31, was a visa overstayer.
They were taken into UK Border Agency detention while work to remove them from the country is carried out.
Unless it proves appropriate right to work checks were carried out, the business faces a potential fine of up to £40,000 – £10,000 per illegal worker.
No-one from the restaurant was available for comment this week.
