A MAN with a drink problem has been jailed for an unprovoked assault which fractured an airman’s cheekbone.

Karl Roberts, of St George’s Road, Stowlangtoft, knocked his victim sideways with the force of the blow, Ipswich Crown Court heard last Wednesday.

Roberts, who was jailed for 30 months by Recorder Jane Humphryes, had pleaded guilty to assault inflicting grievous bodily harm on September 23 2011.

He also pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified the following day.

The court heard the attack took place in a smoking area outside the Vision Nightclub, in Bury St Edmunds, when Roberts punched Wayne Jenkins from behind without warning, said prosecutor Michael Crimp.

About 20 minutes earlier Mr Jenkins had spoken briefly to a woman on the dance floor but moved away when she said she was with her boyfriend.

Guy Ayers, in mitigation, said Roberts, who was receiving counselling for an alcohol problem, had thought Mr Jenkins had been acting inappropriately towards a woman he knew and he had been upset.

Roberts was also banned from driving for two years for the driving offence.
