Woman admits stealing £4,980 from her Stowmarket based NHS employer

A WOMAN who stole more than £4,000 from her employers at NHS Stow Lodge, in Stowmarket, used it for day-to-day expenses after her husband became ill, a court has heard.

Today, at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court, Carolyn Green, 65, of Wigston Road, Bury, pleaded guilty to stealing cash, namely £4,980.49, between June 21, 2010, and January 14, 2011.

Magistrates heard that part of her duties as an administrator involved collecting and banking money that had been raised through tea and coffee mornings.

After Green retired in 2011, her employers noticed a personal cheque had been banked and reported it to the NHS fraud investigator who investigated with police, said Lesla Small, prosecuting.

In mitigation David Stewart said Green’s husband had suffered a heart attack and was unable to work so had been made redundant. Shortly after this they fell into debt, owing up to £3,000.

Mr Stewart told magistrates the money was not spent on holidays but on the couple’s day-to-day expenses.

“They rely on fairly meagre state pensions for all their income,” he said.

Miss Small said that Green was ‘very remorseful’ and felt ashamed of what had happened.

Green will be sentenced at Crown Court.
