Three get suspended sentences after attack
A JUDGE has told three men that courts will ‘not tolerate drunken thuggery’ as he sentenced them for a violent attack outside a Bury St Edmunds nightclub.
They were given suspended custodial sentences and ordered to pay compensation to their victim, who was attacked outside Brazilia’s just after 1am on March 3.
Joshua Stoggles, 21, of Worcester Close, Bury St Edmunds, Saskit Hemsing, 22, of Tomline Walk, Bury, and Samuel Reed, 19, of Willcox Avenue, Bury, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.
Ipswich Crown Court heard that following an incident inside the club the victim, Shane Carter, was followed outside where Stoggles began to punch him, the other two defendants joining in the attack.
Azza Brown, for Hemsing, said he had tried twice to stop the violence.
Sentencing them, Judge David Goodin said: “Drunken thuggery of this kind will not be tolerated in these courts.”
Stoggles received seven months’ imprisonment suspended for 12 months, and must complete 200 hours’ community work and pay £150 compensation to Mr Carter. He will also have to complete a Thinking Skills course and remain under probation supervision for a year.
Hemsing received five months’ imprisonment suspended for 12 months, was ordered to do 120 hours’ unpaid work and pay £150 compensation.
Reed was sent to a Young Offenders Institution for six months, suspended for 12 months. He will have to complete 150 hours’ unpaid work, take part in a Thinking Skills course and pay £150 compensation.
