Rented house used to grow cannabis

A JUDGE has refused to jail a young woman caught with cannabis plants in her home despite her asking for time in custody to ‘sort herself out.’

Shelley Kivlin, 22, had pleaded guilty to allowing her rented home in London Road, Brandon, to be used to raise the illegal crop.

On Wednesday, Ipswich Crown Court heard that Kivlin, who now lives in Aidrie, Scotland, was caught when her landlord called to check the electricity supply and found a cannabis growing operation involving 19 plants in an upstairs bedroom on June 12.

The offence put Kivlin in breach of a suspended prison sentencce for assault.

In mitigation, Mark Renouf said that Kivlin, who has a young daughter, wanted the chance to ‘sort herself out’ and felt prison might be the best place to do that.

Sentencing her, Judge Rupert Overbury said: “It seems to me that although you want me to pass a prison sentence, it doesn’t seem to me that it would be a worthwhile use of public money.

“You would simply be a boarder of the state for a very short period of time.”

Judge Overbury told Kivlin that she would be made the subject of a 12-month conditional discharge and declined to activate the eight weeks remaining of the suspended prison sentence.
