Prison worker smuggled drugs

A PRISON worker who smuggled heroin and cannabis into Highpoint Prison said he had been threatened by an inmate to do so.

Alex Sheppard, 22, and prisoner Adam Bloy, 25, were both jailed on Monday at Ipswich Crown Court –Sheppard for 28 months and Bloy, six years.

Both had pleaded guilty to two offences of conspiracy to supply controlled drugs.

After hearing evidence from a senior prison officer, Judge John Holt said he believed that threats which Sheppard claimed had been made to him by Bloy and which resulted in him attempting to smuggle in drugs, had taken place.

Sheppard, of John Davis Way, Watlington, near King’s Lynn was caught on May 27 last year as he arrived for a night shift at the Stradishall prison.

During a spot check it was found that a rucksack he was carrying contained two packages, one of heroin and one of cannabis.

Bloy, of Woodward Avenue, King’s Lynn, serving a sentence for robbery, was the intended recipient.

Sheppard owned up immediately to senior prison officer Andrew Stone, who said he appeared anxious and had asked for protection for his family, claiming that someone had called at their home earlier in the day and made threats.

Mr Stone said that previously he had always considered Sheppard to be a good members of staff who had worked for three years at Highpoint carrying out night duties which included manning the gate and carrying out roll calls.

Bloy alleged that Sheppard was smuggling the drugs in return for the promise of a cash payment of £300.
