Man in court for brandishing knife
A “meek and mild” man grabbed a hunting knife and held it to the throat of his partner’s former husband, a court has heard.
Shaun Goddard, 45, of Combs Wood Drive, Stowmarket, had been involved in a heated argument with David Rose and while brandishing the knife threatened to cut Mr Rose’s neck.
Ipswich Crown Court heard that no injuries were caused and Goddard handed over the knife to police. Afterwards he was apologetic and tearful, said prosecutor Richard Wood.
The incident led to Goddard pleading guilty to being in possession of a knife in a public place.
Judge Peter Thompson said he accepted that Goddard had been subjected to a degree of provocation and advised him to stay out of the way of Mr Rose in the future.
Goddard was sentenced to three months imprisonment suspended for 12 months and ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid community work. He must also pay £120
prosecution costs and remain under Probation Service supervision for 12 months.
Mr Wood told the court that the incident had begun when Mr Rose arrived at the house in Stowmarket where his ex wife and Goddard lived. During an argument Goddard had “snapped” and picked up the knife.
Goddard had been facing a certain amount of provocation from Mr Rose but that did not excuse what he had then done, said Mr Wood.
Defending, Declan Gallagher said Goddard was the smaller of the two men and the incident was the most recent in what he claimed to be a series involving Mr Rose. Goddard was normally “meek and mild” in character, said Mr Gallagher and regretted his actions.
