Man arrested for shoplifting had cannabis in sock

A MAN who stole perfume from Asda had cannabis stashed in his sock, a court has been told.

Lee Carnegie, 44, of Firtree Close, also had heroin valued at £300 and cocaine worth £80 on him when he was arrested.

But after reading a probabtion report, Judge John Devaux told him he would ‘take a risk’ and impose a suspended prison sentence with an electronic tag.

Carnegie had pleaded guilty to two offences of possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to supply, possession of cannabis and one of theft from Asda, in Bury St Edmunds.

On Wednesday when he appeared at Ipswich Crown Court to be sentenced, Judge Devaux said he had studied the contents of a Probation Service report.

The judge told Carnegie: “It would be tempting for the court to conclude that a prison sentence might save your life.”

Carnegie had recently spent time in hospital as a result of the effects of substance misuse, the court heard.

Judge Devaux imposed a 12 month prison sentence suspended for 24 months with a 10pm to 6am electronically monitored curfew for the next three months.

He said: “It would be very justifiable to send you to prison but I am just persuaded you are now conscious of the damage you are doing to yourself and this is a risk to be taken.”

John Farmer, on behalf of Carnegie, said his client had no previous convictions for drug supply offences.

The medical consequences of his previous lifestyle meant that he had ‘learned his lesson’.

Carnegie was stopped by police after leaving the Asda store without paying for perfume worth £15 and told officers that he had some cannabis in his sock.

While being searched at Bury police station Carnegie handed over heroin with a value of £300 and cocaine worth £80.
