Horse and carriage rides operator admits health and safety breach

A horse and carriage rides operator has admitted breaching health and safety legislation following the death of a grandmother at a country fair.

The prosecution followed an incident at Nowton Park Country Fair in Bury St Edmunds in June 2011 where Carole Bullett, 57, was fatally injured by a runaway horse and carriage.

The carriage rides operator Duncan Drye, 64, of Bishops Road, Bury, pleaded guilty at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday to failing as an employer to ensure that visitors to the country fair were not exposed to risks to their health and safety.

At the same court hearing, St Edmundsbury Borough Council pleaded not guilty to the same offence

Judge Rupert Overbury said that the trial of the council would take place later this year. Drye, who has been granted bail, will be sentenced at a later date.
